To Cook a Bear by Mikael Niemi.

Jussi, a young runaway Sami boy, learns about botany and philosophy in the far north of Sweden in 1852.  When a maid is found dead in the woods, the locals suspect she was attacked by a bear.  Jussi’s mentor, the revivalist preacher Laestadius, is determined to prove the killer was no bear.  To find the real killer, the Preacher must teach Jussi and the locals about human nature and the meaning of life.
