SUMMER SIZZLE CONCERT SERIES: SYNKOFA JAZZ, MAIN LIBRARY

Join us for the innovative sounds of SYNKOFA (Sing-KOH-fah), a three-piece Celtic jazz ensemble featuring violinist Theresa Ellis, guitarist Eric McKenna, and upright bassist Steve Wesson. Their music has Celtic roots with a twist of gypsy jazz flair, swinging tempos, and juxtaposed melodies. Prepare to be transported to the misty Irish Highlands and the great jazz clubs of the 1950s.

CINEMA SATURDAY: KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE (G), MAIN LIBRARY

Kiki is thirteen years old and ready to begin her training as a witch. She moves to the city with her talking cat Jiji and finds a job delivering baked goods on her broomstick. As she makes friends, learns about her abilities and juggles her delivery service job, she learns more about responsibility and independence than she first bargained for. She also learns that adversity can be a helpful tool in gaining confidence in oneself and it doesn’t always mean failure.

CINEMA SATURDAY: THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY (PG), MAIN LIBRARY

Based on the children’s book The Borrowers by Mary Norton, The Secret World of Arrietty is about a family of tiny people who secretly live inside the walls of a human household, “borrowing” items from the humans in order to survive. The story begins with Shawn, who is spending a week at his great-aunt’s house in order to have an operation. While there, he spies Arrietty as she tries to borrow a cube of sugar for her family. Her family warns her not to talk to the human boy because they must remain secret but she and Shawn become friends anyway.

CINEMA SATURDAY: THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA (PG), MAIN LIBRARY

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is a Japanese fable about a poor bamboo cutter who finds a miniature girl inside a stalk of bamboo. He and his wife raise the little girl as their own and she grows up into a beautiful princess. When she learns of her origins from the Moon, she has to decide whether to stay on Earth with her family and friends or return to her people and live the life she was meant to have all along.
